History

Where have all the good stores gone?

Every mountain town deserves a REAL mountain shop!!! Stuff that works minus the gouging.

That’s what Grant Diduck thought back in ’91 when he was twisting wrenches in the local bike shop. He was tired of tourist traps selling ropes that sat in the window, steel carabiners and external frame packs with Ferrari prices. So he started up with a display cabinet in the corner of the bike shop, filled it with a few ropes and carabiners and called it Gravity Gear.

Grant sadly passed away in an unfortunate climbing accident on February of 1993 but he left behind, albeit small, a legacy.

That’s when Dale Diduck packed up his kit and moved back to his hometown and decided keep the shop in the family and build on what his brother had started.

Gravity Gear Jasper | Dale

He focused on selling the finest functioning equipment that was available.

When the shop was closed, Dale would be out developing crags or serving beers at the local D’ed Dog Bar to pay the rent.

In 2000, Dale took the plunge to substantially expand from his small basement store. Together with his wife Dani, and a few wonderful employees along the way, what started as a display case in the local bike shop has been carefully cultured into the best little climbing/outdoor shop in the west – packed with the best stuff, the best staff and the most fun!

Today, Gravity Gear is a business that supports the community, fixes anchors, does trail work, hands out info, and drinks a lot of coffee.

Think global but shop local damn it!

MEET THE TEAM

THE DON Raised in Jasper, Dale made Gravity Gear what it is today. Professional blues drummer in a past life, Dale knows pretty well all there is to know about skiing and climbing around Jasper. He’s a wealth of information, a genius of systems, and the kind of guy you want on the other end of the rope. These days you’ll find him skiing and mountain biking with his family, ripping around on his sled or working on his dream home in Valemount. If your lucky enough to catch him in the shop, ask him why he loves merino so much, where to get a good cup of coffee or how to do the sick problems on the Tonquin boulder.

HEAD HONCHO Gravity Gear wouldn’t be the slick machine it is without Dani Diduck. Originally from Australia, she immersed herself in mountain life, picking up climbing, mountain biking, skiing and hiking and also, Dale. Be it ordering, marketing, merchandising, accounting, scheduling, or whatever else is needed, Dani is the mastermind that keeps Gravity Gear running. She can explain the subtle differences about every piece in the store from her extensive product testing. When she is not in the shop, you will find her out on the trails or in her garden, doing yoga or hanging with her boys.
