Gravity Gear’s story began in 1991 with a humble bike mechanic who dreamed of opening a dedicated climbing boutique in Jasper.

Grant Diduck, frustrated by the lack of commercial support for the sport he loved, decided to start his own business. He aimed to attract climbers like himself to the park and the emerging local crags, providing them with local knowledge and a wide range of high-quality equipment at accessible prices.

Armed with nothing but his passion for climbing, Grant managed to rent a small corner of the bike shop where he worked. There, he set up a single display cabinet and filled it with a modest selection of climbing gear. Above the cabinet, he hung a small sign bearing the business’s name: ‘Gravity Gear’.

Over the next couple of years, climbers came to know Gravity Gear as the go-to place for quality climbing gear and local advice on the best climbing spots.

Unfortunately, just two years after making his dream a reality, Grant’s life was tragically cut short in a climbing accident. That’s when Dale, Grant’s brother—who shared his love of climbing but had been pursuing a career as a musician in Vancouver—made a momentous decision. He packed up his drum kit and returned to Jasper, determined to keep the shop in the family and build on Grant’s legacy.

Dale fully embraced the business and supported the climbing community through trail work, developing crags, fixing anchors, and handing out topos. He focused on promoting the best climbing hardware available.

In 2000, Dale and his new wife, Dani, moved the business to a larger location with a storefront on Patricia Street. Over the years, Gravity Gear grew, expanding its product range to include clothing and outdoor camping accessories.

Today, Gravity Gear remains a family owned brick-and-mortar shop with an extensive range of quality products. With an enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff, they continue to cater to the outdoor needs of the Jasper community and serve customers further afield through their online store.
